Home Telehealth: The Basics

This new ATA online certificate course focuses on home telehealth applications and addresses clinical, administrative, financial and legislative issues related to implementing and sustaining successful home telehealth programs. This course is at a beginning level to help novice learners understand these concepts, however, it also can serve as an excellent review for intermediate and advanced learners in meeting educational or competency requirements. 

The field of home telehealth, remote monitoring and disease management is one of the fastest growing areas within the field of telemedicine. Thus, the need for increasing education and quality assurance measures has grown commensurately with increasing utilization. A key priority of the American Telemedicine Association is to provide educational offerings and through this online course, the ATA strives to meet the informationa nd educational needs of its largest membership base. The ATA;s Home Telehealth Special Interest Group (SIG) executive committee developed this basic course.

At the conclusion of this educational activity, the learner will be able to:

  • Define what home telehealth is and how it is successfully applied in the healthcare environment.
  • Identify key clinical, administrative and technical design and support elements for implementing a successful home telehealth.
  • Identify appropriate methods for collecting data to provide an evidence base that demonstrates the value of home telehealth.
  • Identify critical areas such as change management, organizational behavior, and buy-in from stakeholders, marketing, and recruitment that greatly impact the success or failure of home telehealth programs.
  • Discuss the key political issues affecting the full utilization of home telehealth in the healthcare arena.

Target Audience
All clinical practitioners, technical support staff, leadership, financial and strategic planners involved in implementing and sustaining home telehealth/remote monitoring operations. This group includes, but is not limited to: nurse practitioners, registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, dieticians, case managers, physicians, physician assistants, pharmacists, rehabilitation specialists, social workers, healthcare executives, financial or strategic planners, and technical support staff.

Continuing Education and Continuing Medical Education Credits
Continuing education and continuing medical education credits and a certificate of completion are offered by the University of South Florida College of Medicine upon the successful completion of the following course requirements:

  • Completion of each lesson and self-review questions.
  • Completion of the final examination with 75% or greater score.
  • Completion of the program evaluation.

Upon completion of these online course requirements, a certificate will be mailed by the University of South Florida College of Medicine within 3 weeks.

Accreditation Information
Physicians

This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of the University of South Florida College of Medicine and the American Telemedicine Association. The University of South Florida College of Medicine is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The University of South Florida College of Medicine designates this educational activity for a maximum of 7.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Pharmacists
The University of South Florida College of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. This program has been approved for 7.0 contact hours (0.7 CEUs). Universal program number is as follows: UPN 230-999-06-011-H04. To receive continuing education credit, a pharmacist must fully complete all lessons and must return the program evaluation instrument.

Nurses
The University of South Florida College of Nursing is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. This activity is for 8.4 contact hours.
