Edward M. Brown, MD

Dr. Brown is the Chief Executive Officer of the Ontario Telemedicine Network.  An emergency physician who studied mathematics and engineering before embarking on his medical career, Dr. Brown combined these skills in 1998 when he founded NORTH Network. NORTH Network evolved out of Dr. Brown’s examination of how telemedicine could alleviate the barriers to accessing health care posed by distance and a shortage of health professionals in Northern Ontario into a comprehensive telemedicine program connecting thousands of patients with health care providers.

Dr. Brown has served on ATA’s Awards Committee for several years.  He is also a past officer of the Canadian Society of Telehealth.  North Network received ATA’s President’s Award for the Advancement of Telemedicine in 2005.

In July 2006, with the support of Ontario’s Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, NORTH Network, CareConnect and VideoCare merged to become the Ontario Telemedicine Network (OTN).  Under Dr. Brown’s leadership, OTN supports clinical, educational and administrative telemedicine services at nearly 400 sites throughout the province of Ontario.

Dr. Brown sits on numerous boards and advisory committees, including Ontario's E-Physician Council, OntarioMD Board of Directors and the Operational Space Medicine Advisory Panel of the Canadian Space Agency, Astronaut Office.  Dr. Brown is a past recipient of a CANARIE I-WAY award for national leadership in the development of Canada’s information highway and was the 2003 winner of Canadian Healthcare Manager magazine’s ‘Who’s Who in Healthcare Award’ in the ‘Technology’ category.
